Middle School
Kingshott Middle School presently comprises two forms each from Years 3, 4 and 5. We are housed in new, purpose built accommodation, known as the Ashbrook, which was opened in 2008. The building comprises six large and bright classrooms, cloakroom and toilet facilities, a dedicated office and resources room and a super open area, with its own computer bank, which is used as additional teaching space, library and practical area. The Middle School provides a bright, safe and secure learning and teaching space. Whilst having its own identity, it is a fully integrated part of the whole school. Our objective in the Middle School phase is to provide a caring, happy and stimulating environment for the children as they make the transition from the Pre-Prep to the Senior School proper.
For most of the academic curriculum, children in Years 3 and 4 are taught by their class teacher. The practical subjects – Art, Design Technology, ICT and Music are taught by specialist teachers, as are French, PE and Games. Children in Year 5 have their teaching base within the Ashbrook, but are taught by subject specialists in their own classrooms for the major part of the whole curriculum.
The Middle School has a vibrant, happy and busy atmosphere. Our focus is attaining the highest possible standards for all our children in the academic subjects, but we are also aware of the importance of ensuring that the wider curriculum is made available and accessible to all. Approximately one third of our weekly timetable is dedicated to sport, music, the practical and creative disciplines and new technology. A strong emphasis is placed on pastoral care and education to create good citizens, not only of Kingshott but also of the wider community.
We aim to enhance and enliven the curriculum through the provision of value added activities. For example, we have themed days in History including the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Vikings. We organise trips to reinforce classroom learning in subjects such as History, Science, Geography, Art and Religious Studies. Recent trips have included the Fitzwilliam Museum, Imperial War Museum at Duxford, a Sikh Gurdwara and the Roald Dahl Museum.
In Year 4 the children all go on a week’s residential trip to the Kingswood Activity Centre in Norfolk. This is hugely popular and gives the children the opportunity to challenge themselves physically, carry out environmental investigations and learn to live and get along with each other in very different circumstances and surroundings. In Year 5 the children spend a week away in the Peak District as part of their Geography studies.
Many children learn to play musical instruments taught by peripatetic teachers. We try to ensure that all children take part in at least one drama / musical production during their time in the Middle School. We offer a range of after school activities and children can also stay after school to complete homework under the supervision of a Middle School teacher.
We are proud of our part of the Kingshott family and the children have created their own slogan…
“The Middle School is cool”
